YouTube Research
October 22, 2009
Participatory media is about users taking part online and making their own material and content to upload and share with other users. Interacting with other users is one of the majors in which YouTube has become so popular; users are able to upload their own videos but also comment, give feedback and eventually become friends with other YouTube users.
My initial thought is why do people insist on uploading their videos to YouTube? There will definitely be different responses to this question and different reasons why people have decided to create their own content; but still, I want to find out what makes YouTube so popular and why people have decided to creat their own content instead of, like in the past, just depending on the media industry to deliver their content to us as audiences.
The video above is about Participatory Media and examples of it. It aims to inform people about Web 2.0 and participatory media.
The next video is a music video made by an amatuer artist to promote his work and to enable him to gain popularity and what better way than through YouTube?
This is what this particular userĀ uses YouTube for; to interact with other users, promote his work and to gain publicity; an interesting way to use YouTube but for other users these reasons will differ and this is what I am interesting in researching, to be able to draw conclusions about why YouTube is so popular and why people decide to upload their own content to the site.
